About JavaScript-PacManplus

This is the famous JavaScript-PacMan's final cross-browser version.
"JavaScript-PacMan" was designed as a demo-page for an advanced employment of JavaScript animation techniques. The first version (for Netscape Navigator 3.0) was published in late 1996/Jan.1997 followed by an update using smooth layer animations (for Netscape navigator/Communicator 4.0) in Aug. 1997.
"JavaScript-PacMan" might well have been the first arcade style game on the web implemented in JaveScript only! The game doesn't use any plug-ins or other extensions.

How to Move – keyboard control:
Use the cursor keys or the numeric keypad to navigate the Pacman. (Mouse-control is still active.)

Special keys:
"N" ... New game
"P" or "ESC" ... Pause (will be indicated by a "P" in the level display)

(Netscape 4 users will have to click anywhere in the window first, to give keyboard focus to it!)

For the comfort of notebook users an alternate set of configurable keys is availble:

default: i (up)
         (left) j k l (right)
                (down)

How to Move – mouse control:
Mouse control was the early concept (before keyboard imput was introduced with Netscape 4.x).
Center the mouse pointer over the controller at the lower right side of the game area and move the mouse in the direction you want the Pacman to move.
Move the mouse onto the arrows to direct the Pacman through the maze. To repeat a command (p.e. to start a new level) center the pointer in the middle and reenter the arrow's area (clicking the arrow works just the same).

Pausing:
Click the ball in the middle of the controller to pause the game.
Click again to continue.

Bonus Lifes:
You will be rewarded with a bonus life every 7000 points.
There may be a maximum of 4 lifes "in stock" and one in play.

Animation Smoothness:
In case you are using a fast computer (800 MHz+), increase the smoothness settings for better animation quality. The initial setting is quite low to conform to slower hadware.

Speed Settings:
The actual animation speed results from the combination of speed and smoothness and the limitations of the hardware used. If the animations turns "jaggy" reduce smoothness to optimize your top speed.

Level Designs:
"JavaScript-PacMan" comes with a set of 5 preset levels. The layouts of any level higher are generated by random on the fly. (This can take a short moment.) Thanks to this unique level generator you are supplied with an infinite number of different mazes. But be aware, for you will not be able to train them ... As a small compensation you'll find an extra pill in most of them.

You may also choose to start your game with random levels just from the beginning.

Compatibility:
Any "modern" browser as

  • DOM-compatibles as Netscape 6/7, Mozilla, MS Internet Explorer 6.x or compatible
  • Netscape 4.x or compatible
  • MS Internet Explorer 4.x/5.x or compatible
(Images best with monitor depth higher than 256 colours.)
